Talkback with librettist, Wende Persons after the performance on October 6th.
Talkback with composer, Paula Kimper AND Louise Brodie, daughter of Alma Routsong (aka Isabel Miller, novelist) after the performance on October 20th.
Composer: Paula M. Kimper
Libretto: Wende Persons
Based on the novel by: Isabel Miller
Third Eye is proud to present Patience and Sarah, the first opera to tell a love story between two women. Based on the lives of 19th century American painter Mary Ann Willson and her partner “Miss Brundage,” this stunning opera features an entirely female creative team with a female composer, librettist, and novelist. Themes of self-acceptance, forgiveness, and autonomy are woven throughout a tapestry of violence, judgement, and erasure. But throughout it all, the strength of the female spirit soars as we watch Patience and Sarah struggle against class barriers, family expectations, and societal boundaries in order to embrace their own identities and each other.
What critics are saying:
“A rare--and moving--opera about women in love.” --- New York Magazine
“Kimper's music recalls Gian Carlo Menotti in its conservatism and Richard Strauss in its soaring vocal lines." --- USA Today
"There was a soaring affirmation in this music of the transcendent beauty of life and love." --- The New York Times
