The Women Who Opened the Universe

Proposal Statement

Submission Guidelines

Third Eye Theatre Ensemble are producing an opera based on Ada Lovelace. The opera runs September 17th -October 3rd at the Edge Theater in Chicago. This is a call for an art exhibition to run concurrently in the theater with the production. “The Analytical Engine weaves algebraic patterns just as the Jacquard loom weaves flowers and leaves” (1843).

Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), Daughter of Lord Byron and Annabella Milbanke, published an article in 1843 in which she noted a stepwise sequence of operations for solving mathematical problems. She was 27, in an age where women could not own property, vote, and belonged to a man. Her mother had mathematical training and insisted that her daughter received the same. She was a visionary that proposed ideas that would come into being 200 years in the future. Furthermore, she was a woman in a time when women were infantilized and yet still found her voice. She was a true inspiration and visionary. Mary Jackson was a Black American woman born in 1921. She was a mathematician and aerospace engineer who became the first BIPOC female engineer to work for NASA, and was part of the West Computers which was comprised of a group of BIPOC women that provided data essential for the success of the early US space program. Margaret Hamilton was an American woman born in 1936. She was a computer scientist, systems engineer and was the director of the Software Engineering Division of the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory and wrote the flight software for NASA’s Apollo program.

Art should inspire, provide a reflection of current society, and provide a vision of the future. Women have been fundamental in the progression of STEM. There will be a best in show and audience favorite, that will have their work promoted on Third Eye’s website and social media.

This call for art asks you to interpret the influence that Ada Lovelace, Mary Jackson, Margaret Hamilton, and all who have followed have had on STEM. Interpret how you perceive these women and those who followed and how they changed our world, in the present and in the future. This call accepts fine art, photography, and digital art. All art genres and styles are
welcome.
